Learn, Train, and Entertain!
Education at The Court Theatre is all about nurturing talent, sparking creativity, and providing high-quality arts education across every stage of the theatre-making process. With a rich legacy in training and performance, our programs aim to inspire and equip the next generation of artists, whether they’re drawn to the spotlight or the creative forces behind the scenes.
The Court Theatre Youth and Jester Youth Companies
The Court Theatre Education programme proudly hosts The Court Theatre Youth Company and The Jester Youth Company, two dynamic programs that offer unparalleled training and performance opportunities for young artists and entertainers. Our Youth Companies provide a real-world bridge to the performing arts industry, immersing participants in industry-level training and allowing them to hone their skills on stage.
Drama & Improv Classes
Our drama and improvisation classes cater to all ages, from children to adults, with a focus on learning through fun, teamwork, and creative expression. Each class is led by our incredibly talented teaching artists and industry professionals who bring passion and expertise, making each session both a learning experience and a journey into the heart of theatre. Participants not only develop performance skills but also gain confidence, creativity, and a deeper appreciation of storytelling as they become part of The Court Theatre’s vibrant education community.
Supporting School Education
At The Court Theatre, we are committed to supporting teachers and schools across the South Island by providing accessible theatre experiences for students. Our offerings include school matinees, hands-on workshops, and comprehensive educational packs that align with curriculum needs. In addition to live theatre, we provide theatre technology training through work experience and internship opportunities, partnering with schools, community groups, and tertiary institutions to give students hands-on experience and skills in stagecraft and production.
Theatresports™ In Schools
Our Theatresports™ In Schools competition is New Zealand’s longest-running and most successful school Theatresports™ event, drawing together hundreds of young, talented improvisers from across the South Island. This exciting annual competition offers students a chance to showcase their improv skills, develop their stage presence, and, most importantly, celebrate the joy of unscripted performance. The energy and creativity displayed by these young artists make Theatresports™ In Schools a cornerstone event for aspiring performers across the region.
School Touring Shows
Our school touring shows bring the magic of live theatre directly to classrooms across Waitaha Canterbury and Te Waipounamu South Island, reaching over 12,000 students each year. These tours are specially designed to engage young audiences and offer students, from primary to secondary levels, a chance to experience live theatre firsthand. We believe that introducing young people to the world of theatre enriches their education, sparks their imagination, and helps foster the next generation of arts supporters.
Professional Development
At The Court Theatre, we believe that engagement with arts activity unlocks people’s creativity and imagination. We love working with schools and teachers to support them to bring more creativity into their classrooms. Our teachers’ masterclasses provide a platform for emerging professionals and drama teachers to hone performance techniques, gain confidence and develop directing and theatre making skills. All of our masterclasses are taught by expert tutors. Get in touch to find out more about how we could support the professional development at your school.
