Bringing theatre into the Waitaha Canterbury community.
At The Court Theatre, our commitment to community engagement goes beyond performances; it means community investment. We believe in creating opportunities for everyone to experience theatre as a welcoming, shared space. Through partnerships with schools and local organisations—particularly those serving underserved and minority communities—we strive to foster a genuine interest in the arts and build meaningful connections. Our engagement programs listed below aim to inspire and involve people of all ages and backgrounds, making theatre accessible, inclusive, and impactful for everyone.
In Residence
Our In-Residence initiative enables us to partner annually with various community groups to co-create and present unique theatre projects. This programme invites the voices and perspectives of our community into the creative process, providing a platform for stories that celebrate and reflect the rich cultural diversity of our region. Each collaboration aims to strengthen bonds with the community and make theatre an expressive outlet for all.
Expressions of interest are welcomed.
Ambassador Programme
Our Ambassador Programme is designed to engage and inspire senior high school students who are passionate about theatre. Selected students gain free access to our shows and have opportunities to connect with industry professionals, develop their understanding of theatre, and share their love for the arts with peers and community. This program offers young people a meaningful, hands-on introduction to the theatre world and its many career pathways.
Project Gilberthorpe
In partnership with Te Whare Awhero (Hope House), we are proud to lead Project Gilberthorpe, an outreach initiative that brings drama education and live theatre experiences to disadvantaged youth. Through workshops and mentorship, we offer young people from underserved communities a chance to explore theatre as both an art form and a potential career. This project is part of the Longitudinal Whanau Support Programme, which aims to give disadvantaged children the same life options as others, empowering them to dream and achieve without limitations.
